Description of Nuclear Waste Lead Drum

Nuclear waste lead drums—technically referred to as "radioactive waste shielding containers" or "lead-shielded waste bins"—are critical protective devices used in nuclear medicine, radiological diagnosis and therapy, and industrial flaw detection for the safe collection, temporary storage, and transport of solid radioactive waste. The inner shielding core is constructed from high-purity electrolytic lead plate (purity ≥99.99%). This lead layer is formed as a single, seamless unit to eliminate any pathways for radiation leakage. The outer protective shell is typically clad in 304 medical-grade stainless steel or cold-rolled, corrosion-resistant steel plate. Beyond providing protection against rust and physical impact, the outer shell facilitates cleaning and disinfection, meeting the hygiene standards required in medical facilities. Its primary function goes beyond mere containment; it provides "immediate shielding" via the high-purity lead layer, effectively absorbing and blocking gamma (γ) or beta (β) rays emitted by radionuclides. This ensures that radiation levels in the surrounding environment remain within safe limits, thereby safeguarding medical personnel, the general public, and the ecosystem.

Acceptance and Safety Standards of Nuclear Waste Lead Drum

Radiation Dose Rate Limit: The radiation dose rate at a distance of 30 cm from the outer surface of the waste bin must be ≤2.5 μSv/h.

Leakage Detection: No radiation leakage is permitted at the lid gaps or weld seams.

Qualification Certification: The product must be accompanied by a third-party test report issued by an agency with CMA/CNAS accreditation, verifying the lead equivalent and shielding performance.

Buying Guide: Pitfalls to Avoid

‌Beware of Misleading Specifications‌: Avoid products with substandard lead lining thickness or those made from recycled, impure lead; such products offer inadequate shielding and fail to meet environmental compliance standards.

‌Complete Lead Encapsulation‌: Ensure the lid is also fully lined with lead to prevent radiation leakage at the top, which would create a gap in protection.

‌After-Sales Support‌: Choose suppliers that offer replacement parts (such as rubber seals or pedal assemblies) to avoid having to scrap the entire unit due to minor component damage.
